Don’t Shop When You’re Hungry

This old wisdom says it all.

Go shopping when you’re hungry, and you may come back with everything in the world, except what’s good for you!

You know how it goes.

With eyes bigger than our stomachs, we load up on way more than we need. And sometimes treats have a way of sneaking in – forcing vegetable to take a back seat. Oops.

Yep, same kind of thing goes for hiring in your cleaning business.

If we make hiring decisions when we’re short-handed, behind the 8-ball, and desperate for help, in other words ‘hungry’ – and what’s likely to happen?

You know what.

We compromise, settle, and could end up hiring folks, we maybe wouldn’t normally hire in a million years – if we were thinking more clearly.

We tell ourselves, they’ll be ok – we’ll give them extra training. We’ll help them overcome their obvious shortcomings. It’ll all work out in the end – somehow, magically.

Either way, at least it’s somebody, and we sure as heck need somebody now!

And how does that usually end up?

You know. I know. We all know, don’t we?

Right – NOT so good.

So, let’s make a point of not making THAT avoidable mistake in our commercial cleaning or maid service businesses – starting now.

How?

Well, lots of ways, things like planning ahead, placing ads in advance, and interviewing earlier, and more oftenbasically not waiting until the last minute.

If we do that, we stand a much better chance of having a clear head and finding the kind of staff we can count on – not the ‘snack food’ variety that may take care of us for the moment, but likely ends up hurting us in the long run.

You get the idea.

    One of the many tools we use in looking for new hires (associates) is the introduction card.

    Ours is about 2” high and 7” long which folds to a 2” x 3.5” (business card size). Our supervisory and management associates carry these with them to hand out to individuals that they notice doing a good job at other types of businesses like a restaurant, store, and etcetera.

    The outside has a collage of color photos our associates doing cleaning, our company logo and on the inside it has the following text:

    Hello,
    I work at Absolute! Building Maintenance. We are a family owned and operated Facility Maintenance firm. Our associates clean all types of facilities and we keep our eyes out for great people to represent our company. I observed that you seem to be a hard-working individual who could be an asset to our firm. We provide cleaning services for our clients and have different work assignments from two to four hours shift per night, three to five days per week. If you are interested in this type of work and working our team, please either call our special JOBS Line toll free at (888) 413-JOBS (5627) or (989) 753-JOBS (5627) OR go to our website and fill out an on-line application. When you are given an appointment bring this card with you and tell the interviewer that you received this card from:

    Thanks, hope to see you on our team soon!

    If we hire a person that was brought to our company by this card and the new associate works for 60 days the supervisor or manager whose name is on the introduction card receives a $25.00 gift certificate bonus.
